Ponchos: FAQs and How To Wear

Ponchos. Otherwise also known as punchu, pontro and also "blanket". It is an incredibly warm and toasty piece of clothing you will ever wear around your upper body. So let's have a look at ponchos, styling them and wearing them the right way:

WHAT IS A PONCHO?

Ponchos are, well, very long blankets with a hole in the middle that used to be worn A LOT by the pre-Incans. Those intricately woven pieces of art were created in Peru, as they used to serve in burial clothing ceremonies and accompany the person who passed on to the afterlife. Another wide-spread belief is that the poncho is similar to the Unku, which is a vest that was typically created with lots of geometric shapes to signify a certain higher status in society.

WHAT WERE PONCHOS USED FOR?

Like we already mentioned, ponchos were used as a formal attire for burials and also as protection against bad weather. Due to their rectangular design, it was quite easy to slip into one during the rainy days.

ARE PONCHOS STILL IN STYLE IN 2022?

Yes, they are! A fashion staple that never goes out of style, a poncho is an amazing fit for those in-between days where it's not cold enough to wear a jacket, but it's also not warm enough to just grab a t-shirt.

WHAT TOP DO YOU WEAR UNDER A PONCHO?

You can wear something that is comfortable, beathable and light. Since most warmer ponchos are quite thick, you won't really be needing to pile up on the top.

THE SARAPE BLANKET VS. THE PONCHO

You might be suprised but they aren't one and the same thing. The Sarape blanket has an entirely different pattern, colors and origins that are unlike the poncho's. The typically Mexican blanket is unique and is not to be mistaken with the poncho.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PONCHO AND A RUANA?

A poncho has a hole in the middle so that you can put it on. A ruana has a slit down the front which distinguishes it from the poncho.

HOW TO WEAR A PONCHO?

There are many ways in which you can wear the poncho, but the general rule of thumb is - anything that appears slimmer on the bottom is a good fit. Because ponchos are typically wide and voluminous, you typically want to take away some of that heaviness with the help of:

- Tight leggings

- Stockings

- Jeans

- A tight panth

- Shorts

Generally, the centerpiece will be the poncho, so keeping it minimalistic with all accessories is recommended.

Do keep in mind though, that not all ponchos are made equal. Our 100% GOTS certified organic cotton ponchos are soft and smooth, can help protect you from the winter months and are sustainably imported by Zett Organics.
